Kentuckiana Unit

KHS Mission Statement: To further the knowledge and use of herbs, to promote educational projects relating to herbs and to subscribe to the objects of the Herb Society of America, Inc.

About Us: In 1983 the Kentuckiana Herb Society (KHS) was founded by a group of gardeners from Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky to further their study and share their knowledge of herbs.   Today our membership consists of gardeners living in the greater Louisville areas and the areas of Southern Indiana.  We welcome anyone who is interested in furthering their knowledge of herbs.

Gardens Maintained: Since 1985 our unit has developed and maintained a sensory garden on the campus of The Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB). The school’s vibrant garden is situated in Louisville, KY and is one of the oldest schools for the blind in the United States of America, chartered in 1842.  Starting in 2018 our unit began maintaining a colonial style herb garden at The Governor Hendricks Headquarters at the Corydon, IN state historic site.  This delightful small garden, open to the public, is visited by school children from around the state as well as other visitors to Indiana’s First State Capitol.

Annual Community Event: In early Spring members host a Spring Education Day - offered to the public and held the last Saturday of March.  We have guest speakers, a plant sale, an herbal marketplace, curated vendors, a raffle, and a delicious catered breakfast and lunch.  In addition to this well-attended event, KHS members are available to speak at various herb related programs and, upon request, may have a booth to sell herbal items and provide herbal education to the public.

Meeting Thymes: Meetings are held monthly at Park Christian Church, 2231 Green Valley Road, New Albany, IN.

KHS members enjoy gathering for our herbal programs which include an herb themed presentation as well as an herb of the month report, a book of the month report, a business meeting and refreshments hosted by KHS members, affectionately known as “Herbies”.  Programs may consist of herbal education and garden lectures, demonstrations, hands-on projects, and the occasional field trip.  It is wonderful thyme for sharing our love of herbs.
