Samull Classroom Herb Garden Grants

Grant Description and Eligibility

The application deadline is October 1, 2022 and winners will be notified after December 1, 2022.

Thanks to the generosity of Donald Samull, who made a planned gift to The Herb Society of America, an herb garden grant program for elementary school classes was established more than a decade ago. These grants ensure that learning about herbs can be part of the cirruculum, a resource Mr. Samull — an elementary school teacher — regularly used in his own classroom.

Elementary classrooms grades 3-6 with fifteen students or more may apply for a grant to establish an herb garden. In addition to plants, the funds may be used for supplies such as soil, plants trays, containers, child or youth sized tools, etc. Fifteen grants of $300 each are awarded annually.

Each recipient of the Samull Classroom Herb Garden Grant will be asked to sign a contract, submit photos, and write a brief report. Photos and project details may be used by The Herb Society of America in promotional materials.

The images above document the hard work of the students at Mt. Everest Academy, in San Diego, California. They were a 2021 grant recipient! The students (and instructors) at Mt. Everest Academy leaned into their unique environment and the agricultural traditions of their location. What would your classroom's herb garden look like? What would make it unique to your school, community and environment?

You must complete the application form in one session. If you leave this page prior to completing the form, no information will be saved. This form must be completed in its entirety to receive consideration.
