Written and published by The Herb Society of America since 1935, The Herbarist is one of the nation's oldest continually published horticultural journals. The Herbarist is made possible through the efforts of a collective of HSA members - the talented researchers, writers, and editors who develop content; the generous supporters who sponsor the publication and buy advertising; and, the discerning readers who value vetted herbal information by subject matter experts.

The 2026 edition views herbs from a myriad of perspectives. Vicki Motz, PhD, explores the long-standing ethnobotanical tradition of Indigenous Peoples and the current research on some the plants they used. Peggy Riccio, helps you plan a purposeful garden with companion planting facts and ideas. Susanna Reppert-Brill asks “Who Was Mrs. Grieve? AND in a separate article, describes the herbal/floral clock you could plant in your garden. Lois Sutton, PhD, reviews her collection of poisonous plant books and walks with you through a year in her yard with its surprising number of poisonous plants.
