The Texas Thyme Unit of The Herb Society of America

Inspired by legendary and beloved East Texas herbalist, Madeline Hill, a group of excited and talented gardeners founded the Texas Thyme Unit of The Herb Society of America in March of 2009 in Huntsville, TX.  The founding group of seventeen members began meeting in member homes where savory herbal luncheons were shared and friendships deepened over a growing knowledge of herbs, their use, and cultivation.

As the Unit grew, the group found a new home for their meetings at the lovely, historic Wynne Home in Huntsville.  In the spring of 2011, members designed and planted an herb garden on the grounds of the home.  The garden was named the Ella Ruth Herb Garden after Ruth and Samuella Wynne who lived in the Wynne Home as young girls in the early 20th century.  The garden was planted near a very old pecan tree and was designed to be an educational exhibit of herbs that grow well in the Huntsville area.  Medicinal, culinary, biblical, and fragrant herbs were planted in the garden. The garden is a focal point at the back of the home.  An herb cottage was built several years later and a Memorial Rose Garden and Children’s Sensory Garden were planted. The gardens are GreenBridgesTM and Monarch Waystation certified. Texas Thyme members maintain the gardens.

The mission of the Texas Thyme Unit is to promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing.  Unit members regularly give programs for school children and community groups. In March of 2012, the group began the annual Herb Festival at the Wynne Home, as a major fundraiser.  This spring event is a free event to the public. The Festival is a celebration of herbs with a sale of herbs, passalong, and pollinator plants grown by members, lectures and demonstrations, musicians, artists, and vendors set up around the grounds of the Wynne Home.

The Texas Thyme Unit meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Wynne Home Arts Center in Huntsville at 10:00AM (Check our website for changes in meeting dates).  Membership is open to anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of herbs.  The Unit is a 501(c)3 organization.  Fundraising proceeds go toward educational programs and the maintenance and expansion of the gardens at the Wynne Home Arts Center.
