Northern California Unit

The Northern California Unit of the Herb Society of America was founded in 1953. Unit members are from the greater San Francisco Bay Area, predominantly in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties.

The Unit’s mission is to promote the knowledge, use, and delight of herbs to members and the greater community through educational programs and research, public events, and maintenance of the unit’s garden. We explore various topics such as cultivation and harvesting, propagation, culinary uses, medicinal uses, crafting, and traditional uses. Our members have diverse backgrounds and varying levels of knowledge about herbs – we welcome both the novice who is just starting to learn and the master gardener with many years of experience, and everyone in between.

Monthly Meetings:  There are 10 meetings each year on the second Sunday of each month at 1:30pm unless otherwise noted. Meetings are generally held at Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center in Pleasant Hill, CA and often take the form of presentations by speakers, hands-on workshops, or field trips. Select meetings are opened to the public.

Annual Events: Plant Sale fundraiser at the Urban Expo in April, Morningsun Open House in May, Diablo Valley College Herb Fair in May, Community Outreach in September, and Rodgers Ranch Harvest Festival in October.

Unit Garden: We maintain the herb garden at Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center which is open to the public. Members participate in garden activities such as bed design, planting/installation, and maintenance. There are scheduled gardening days throughout most of the year.
