Western Pennsylvania Unit
The mission of the Western Pennsylvania Unit is to further the knowledge and use of herbs, and to promote cultural, civic and educational projects relating to herbs.
Membership in the Unit is open to anyone who has an active, knowledgeable and/or creative interest in herbs. A candidate for membership is required to submit a written application form to the Chairperson of the Membership Committee after attending two regular meetings of the Unit.
We meet eleven times a year on the third Monday of the Month. Meetings are held at Phipps Garden Center or at other various locations in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Meetings focus on an herb study for the year, a guest speaker, business meeting and lunch.
To promote the delight of herbs, we sponsor two main events each year a Herb Plant Sale in May and Herbes de Pittsburgh in October.
The Western Pennsylvania Unit has established the The Kathryn Giarratani Scholarship Fund of the Western PA Herb Society administered by The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships to college and graduate students following a career path in horticulture/botany or related field. A one-year $1,000 award will be granted to the recipient. For additional information on the Kathryn Giarratani Scholarship Fund
Founded in 1958, the Unit is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Members maintain herb gardens at Mellon Park in Shadyside (PA) and at Old Economy Village, in Ambridge (PA).
