The Tidewater Unit is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research and sharing the experience of its members with the community. We are a local unit of the Herb Society of America.
We meet at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, VA. Meetings begin with a "social time" when we meet, eat and greet and last about an hour. Presentations include such topics as growing and propagating herbs in Tidewater, culinary uses of herbs, crafting with herbs and herbs in your landscape. We even take "photographic tours" of gardens in other countries. For more information about our upcoming events see our website link below.
Each year, our members participate in an Herb Study Group, exploring all there is to know about a selected herb. We compile information about many aspects of the "topic herb," such as horticulture, propagation, history, folklore, medicinal uses and of course, recipes. In addition to our "Herb of the Year" booklets, we have also published special booklets about individual herbal themes.
Our booklets, usually 30-35 pages long, are available for purchase at our meetings or by mail. The following publications are currently available: Garlic, Rosemary, Salvia, Chocolate: Theobroma Cacao, Basil, Pesto (a collection of our members' creative pesto recipes) and Thymely Treats from the Tidewater Tea Room (a collection of recipes for tea-time treats also from our members). Our latest booklet, The 2005 Herb of the Year: OREGANO is hot off the press!
To order any of our booklets by mail, please make your check out to HSATU in the amount of $6.75 (this per book price includes postage) and mail it to Tidewater Unit of the Herb Society of America P.O. Box 61442 Virginia Beach, VA 23466. Remember to specify which booklet(s) you want and be sure to include your address.
