"The cultivar name is pronounced (noy yar), which in Hebrew means "good plant." Madalene Hill originally showed Salvia 'Newe Ya'ar' (Salvia officinalis x S. fruticosa) during the 2001 Promising Plants presentation. Ten years previously, she came across this plant in a packet of fresh herbs from Israel, labeled 'oregano.' True to form, Madalene noted that they looked quite different from common sage – and of course nothing like oregano – and rooted the stems. To her surprise the resulting plants thrived in the hot, humid Texas summers, which common sage fails to do. She gave one cutting to Dr. Art Tucker, who traced the origin and correct name of this Israeli hybrid." – Deni Bown, Promising Plants Presentation, 2006
