What we Collect: Recent Art Acquisitions, 2007-2012

Description:
A selection of recent acquisitions to the Art Department of the Hunt Institute, from the early 19th century through the present, will be placed in the context of the Institute's collection practices and the history of botanical illustration. Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - noon and 1-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-4 p.m. (except March 29-31, May 5 and May 26-27).
Hunt's Annual Open House will be June 23 and 24, 2013

Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks will host the 2013 Ohio Prairie Conference in the Nature Center at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. The 14,000 square foot nature center features a 50-foot-long living stream and many interactive displays.

Metro Parks has restored more than 1,500 acres of native Darby Plains Prairies at Battelle Darby Creek and Prairie Oaks Metro Park. In 2011, in partnership with The Wilds, Metro Parks introduced six bison to restored prairies at Battelle Darby Creek.

The conference will include talks on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Field trip options on Saturday include trips to restored prairies in Metro Parks and at Pearl King prairie savanna and Bigelow and Smith Cemetery prairies.

Cost $35 per person (ages 13 and older) $25 age 12 and under
Includes conference materials, Friday evening snacks, Saturday morning bagels and donuts and a box lunch for the field trips.

Naturalists will offer an interpretive program for children ages 12 and under on Saturday morning.

Description:
Designed as a n educational space, Cheryl's garden includes over 50 Clematis, representing over 10 species as well as large-flowering hybrids, and over 200 species of native plants ranging from Spring ephemerals to large trees. Take advantage of this opportunity to become acquainted with some of the lesser-known small-flowering species Clematis varieties and the beauties of our native flora. We also feature local garden art, live music and refreshments, hands-on workshops available (There is a charge for the workshops but the rest of the event is free and open to the public)

Connecticut Unit Annual Plant Sale

Description:
The Connecticut Unit of The Herb Society of America will hold the Annual Plant Sale during the Rose Weekend in Elizabeth Park. The Park is home to one of the oldest Rose Gardens in the country and is also where the Connecticut unit has planted and maintains an Herb Garden.

The garden has four quadrants which represent Dye herbs, Culinary herbs, Fragrance herbs and Medicinal herbs. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit the spectacular display of roses as well as meet the members of the Connecticut Unit who will be available to answer questions about herbs.

65th Annual Herb Fair hosted by The New York Unit

John Jay Homestead
Katonah, New York

Description:
The New York Unit cordially invites you to join us for our 65th Annual Herb Fair held on the grounds of the Historic John Jay Homestead.

Many varieties of herbs and plants, including some unusual ones will available for purchase and Unit members will be present to advise on herb use and cultivations.

Homemade pantry items such as our special tarragon mustard, raspberry jelly, fresh pesto and chutneys will be available, as will be such unique items as grapefruit lovage jelly, brandied peaches, zucchini relish and tarragon vinegar. Herbal baked goods, herbal teas, local honey, gardening aids and herbal gifts & books will be offered. A raffle featuring herbal items, gardening tools and gift certificates for farm foods and fine dining will also be held.

An herbal lunch which includes herbal sandwiches, sage cookies and our Unit's very popular lovage soup will be available for purchase.

Please plan to visit the Herb Garden at the John Jay Homestead maintained by the New York Unit.

Admission to the Herb Fair is free

Well known to Rocky Mountain gardeners, featured speaker Tammi Hartung is author of Growing 101 Herbs that Heal, Homegrown Herbs and her upcoming book Wildlife-Friendly Vegetable Gardener. Her presentation about Herbs of the Middle Ages will take us back to our herbal roots in Europe between 1200 and 1600 CE when herbs were crucial for cooking, medicine, dying cloth, preparing ink and medicinal uses.

Popular herbalist and cooking instructor Susan Evans will show how to make the most of your summertime libations including refreshing aqua frescas, extraordinary elixirs, and sensational syrups made from fruits and herbs from the garden and summer markets. Become your own mixologist and dazzle your family and guests with custom crafted cocktails and thirst quenchers. Hand out with recipes included.

Mikl Brawner is co-owner of Harlequin Gardens nursery, which specializes in hardy roses, natives, xeriscape and unusual perennials, organic herbs and veggies starts. He is a garden writer and won the 2009 Pacesetter Award for the Environment. He will explain organic rose culture and herbal uses of roses including the petals, essential oils, rose hips and rose seed oil with a focus on home-grown and home-use.
