Northeast Seacoast Unit

The Northeast Seacoast Unit was formed in 1987 and is perhaps one of the smallest units of The Herb Society with member numbers hovering in the 15-18 range. However, as a ratio of active members to members, we have to be one of the most active units within The Herb Society.

Our Unit meets, in the evening, the last Tuesday of each month at Great Bay Services in Newington, New Hampshire. During the summer months, our members help to maintain the herb gaden at Great Bay Services in Newington, New Hampshire and the herb garden at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Our major event of the year is our annual Plant and Herb Sale held in May. Proceeds are used in part to fund a scholarship supporting a horticulture student at the University of New Hampshire.

This past membership year we hosted a series of programs opened to the public. They were hosted at the Portsmouth Public Library in order to better reach the community. The range of topics included; Companion Planting, Good Soils and Sustainability, The Herbal Vitamin, The Health Benefits of Seaweed, The Herb of Sarah Orne Jewett, Adaptogenic Herbs and Shamanic Herbology. The unit newsletter, Northeast Seacoast Herb Snippings, is published monthly.
