The New York Unit of the Herb Society of America was founded in 1938 with the object of stimulating interest in the knowledge and use of herbs, and to develop and maintain educational and cultural projects relating to herbs. We have a rich and inspiring history: our wonderful location has facilitated connections with many outstanding horticultural institution, and brought a wealth of accomplished members to our ranks. We help support public gardens and programs in and around New York City that share the mission of growing herbs "for use and for delight."
We meet regularly, hold an annual Herb Fair, present a program to the public once a year, and maintain a spectacular herb garden on the grounds of the historic John Jay Homestead in Katonah, New York. Membership meetings include speaker, reports on interesting books and favorite plants, and the sharing of herbally-inspired food and drink.
We publish a quarterly newsletter. Our Unit's cookbook "For Use and Delight: A Herbal Sampler" has recently been re-issued, and is sold at our Fair and through a limited number of local vendors. It is available, as are postcards of our herb garden, labels, aprons and tote bags, by contacting Ways & Means Chair, c/o The New York Unit, P.O. Box 471, Bedford Hills, NY 10507.
Our 60th Annual Herb Fair is going to be held on Thursday September 18th 2008 (always the third Thursday in September), from 11 to 2, at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah NY. Our open meeting will be on Thursday April 30th, 2009, at 10:30am (Registration begins at 10:00am and seating is limited), also at the John Jay Homestead. The speaker will be Byran Martin, the owner of Logee's Greenhouses; his topic will be "Fragrance in Foliage and Flowers." An herbal lunch will be served and plants will be available for sale.
